People's opinions about how best to teach mathematics are heavily influenced by their assumptions of the nature of learning mathematics itself. The authors in this new book on teaching and learning mathematics all hold the view that mathematics is a form of intelligent problem solving which plays an important part in children's lives outside the classroom as well as in it. One theme of the chapters is that an important part of teaching mathematics at school is to make explicit for children mathematical ideas which they have already picked up and used in more informal settings. The authors also stress the social construction of children's mathematical knowledge at school through the acquisition of new modes of representation which increases the power of their mathematical understanding. Two major contributions of the book are to seek an integration of social and cognitive aspects of learning and to bring together for the first time in English a comprehensive description of teaching methods based on the idea of social construction which have been developed in Holland, France and Switzerland.
